MPP BILL WALKER REACTS TO ACCOMODATION REVIEW AND MITZIE HUNTER VISIT

Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Member of Provincial Parliament Bill Walker says he hopes the visit of Queen's Park Cabinet Minister Mitzie Hunter to the riding was an education.

The Liberal Minister toured school sites slated for closure the day after BWDSB Trustees voted on their fate following an Accomodation Review Process.

Walker is disappointed Hunter's whirlwind tour neglected the Chesley school, but is hopeful she will scrawl a new funding formula on the blackboard-- one that includes rural realities.

Walker says it is his hope that by her seeing and hearing first-hand the consequences of closures on single-school communities, the Minister will reflect and be open to innovative solutions that would see these schools remain open and viable in future.

The MPP says closures are band-aid solutions that put our communities' sustainability in question and burden students with longer travel rides and fewer extra-curricular opportunities.

The Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound member says he will continue to keep pushing for a moratorium on school closures until the whole Accomodation Review Process is re-examined.

Says Walker, It's never too late to do the right thing.
